The Most Common University Grants

There are some grants funded by the federal government that are considered to be university grants because they apply only to the college or university that has received the funding. The university is also responsible for establishing the criteria that a student needs to meet to be eligible for the grant. Here we’ll look into the most common forms of these grants available so you can understand where some of your options lie.

The Federal Pell Grant is the most well known of the university grants. It is a financial need based grant that is the largest grant program in the country. There is no minimum grade point average or other criteria that a student must meet in order to qualify for this grant other than the fact that you must attend an eligible school. However, you can lose your funding if you do not meet the academic requirements set by your chosen university. Your eligibility is for this grant is determined by your FAFSA application. If you are chosen for the grant, the money will be sent directly to your school and applied toward the balance you owe for your tuition.

The second most common university grant supplied by the federal government is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. This is a need based grant that is available to full time and part time students. This grant differs slightly in the fact that your university determines your eligibility for the award based upon your Student Aid Report. The Student Aid Report is a university’s personalized version of the FAFSA. Once again, if you receive the award, the money will be credited directly to your account. In order to qualify for this you must demonstrate an exceptional need for financing. Just because you have received a Federal Pell Grant, that does not mean you will receive the FSEOG.
